Our pick for the Women’s Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic

Heading into the Championship Tour restart, we had three clear favourites sitting ahead of the rest of the pack. After that event, it’s safe to say that one of those has separated herself into a league of her own. Carissa Moore was dominant in Newcastle, destroying everybody in her path to come away with an …

Our Tips for Men’s Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic

There is a clear top four in men’s surfing at the moment, and three of them filled the semi-final positions last week in Newcastle. That trio of Brazilians will again head the list of top hopes heading into the Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic this week, while John John Florence will be looking to bounce back …

Best Surfboards for the Winter (2021)

The days are getting colder and shorter in most of Australia, which means for many it’s nearing the time to begin the human version of a winter hibernation. Not so for surfers. The chilly weather invariably means it’s time to put the longboards away and prepare for more consistent swell and offshore winds. With that …

The Most Successful Surfers at Newcastle

With the World Surf League’s Championship Tour returning to our screens this week courtesy of the Newcastle Cup, surfing in Newcastle has received more attention than perhaps ever before. Typically in the surfing world, the town is mostly known for being the birthplace of Mark Richards, but there’s more to Newy than just that. Though …

Our pick for the Men’s Rip Curl Newcastle Cup

The return of the WSL Championship Tour is, at long last, upon us, four long months after the season-opening event went down at Pipeline. Typically the first event of the Australian leg would take place at Snapper Rocks, while given that it’s Easter next weekend it feels like it’s about time for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, but neither of those venues w

2020 WSL Championship Tour Roughies

Heading into the 2021 Championship Tour season, it’s the same old names getting most of our attention – names like Steph Gilmore, John John Florence, Tyler Wright, Gabriel Medina, Carissa Moore and Filipe Toledo, to name a few. But while those kind of names are likely to fill up a reasonable amount of the spots at the season-ending Trestles event, there are a handful of roughies who could easily cause a stir.

Women’s Championship Tour Preview

In the past 24 years, there has only been a single surfer who wasn’t either from Australia or called Carissa Moore who has won the women’s world title. That surfer was Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich, and her 2004 championship is surrounded by seven won by both Layne Beachley and Steph Gilmore, four victories to Carissa Moore, …

The Leading Hopes on the Men’s Championship Tour

For a long time, the result of the Men’s Championship Tour seemed like almost a foregone conclusion even before the bell had rung to begin the first tournament. Between 1992 and 2011, Kelly Slater won what is comfortably a record 11 titles, denying many talented competitors winning as many as they deserved in the process. …

Australia’s Three Newest WSL Events

The 2021 WSL Championship Tour will be unique for a range of reasons, but probably most notable among them is the format of the Australian leg of the tour. Rather than the Gold Coast/Bells/Margaret River ritual to which we’ve become so accustomed, this year we’ll, unfortunately, miss out on the first two courtesy of logistical issues relating to the pandemic, government regulations, and all that other jazz to which we’ve also become very accustomed over the past year. Those events will be sorely missed, but of course, the flip side to their absence is that we’ll be treated to three new events, and Rip Curl has jumped right in to sponsor all of them alongside their sponsorship of the new season-ending event at Trestles. Let’s take a look at where they are, and what we can expect from them.

The 2021 WSL Championship Tour – How Will it Work?

Crowning World Champions on the iconic cobblestone point of Lower Trestles in Southern California, the Rip Curl WSL Finals will make history in 2021

The return of the World Surf League is nearly upon us, and as virtually every promotional campaign of virtually every sports league will tell you at the beginning of the season, it’s set to be a year like no other. This time, however, it’s safe to say that it’s true.  In fact, already the season …

Trestles to Host New Season- Ending WSL Event

Crowning World Champions on the iconic cobblestone point of Lower Trestles in Southern California, the Rip Curl WSL Finals will make history in 2021

It’s been a period of significant change for the WSL. First they had to cancel the entire 2020 Championship Tour because of COVID-19. Then the 2021 season began in Hawaii, which for years has been home to the season-ending events at which the two world champions are found and crowned. That has left an unavoidable hole at the end of the calendar, and the WSL has filled it not just with a new tournament, but with a new event.

The Evolution of Surfing Equipment

In the beginning, surfing was pretty straightforward. Accounts of exactly who was onto it first vary, but the generic image most people have is of a big guy wearing nothing but boardshorts slicing through the water on some sort of sculpted log. Over time, of course, that developed, and now it’s all a little more …
