JS Surfboards have been one of the biggest sellers of boards in Australia over the past decade, rolling out quality board after quality board and winning more than their fair share of SBIA Board of the Year awards in that time. That run started with their flagship Monsta board in 2012 and has extended through to the Raging Bull most recently, with a couple of other designs winning awards in between.

The introduction of the mid-season cut has been met with varied responses from fans. The most notable potential advantage was the element of added intrigue that it brings in the early stages of the season, and there’s no doubt that it achieved that, particularly at the Margaret River Pro when a huge number athletes had a spot in the second half of the tour to surf for. The downside, however, was always going to be the potential for big names to miss the second half of the season, with only the top ten women and top 22 men advancing. And while there weren’t as many of these casualties as there could have been, there were still a number of big names who failed to finish above the cut line. Let’s take a look at some of them.

Founding father Al Merrick calls it his passion “to provide the most dedicated surfers with the most advanced, performance designs”, and the high performance boards that this passion has manifested in are renowned the world over.
Firewire might just make the most recognisable surfboards in the world. This isn’t necessarily reflective of popularity – though there are plenty of surfers who swear by these boards. Instead, their distinguishable nature comes more from their aesthetics. If you’ve ever seen a board out in the lineup that looks like it was carved directly from a tree, it was most likely a Firewire. This wooden aesthetic makes these boards stick out like a sore thumb (but a good sore thumb), though they also make plenty of boards with a more traditional appearance, something which they’ve been doing under various names for close to 50 years.
Historically a late-season stop, the European leg of this year’s Championship Tour was this year brought forward to March and cut to just one event after Hossegor was given the flick. That meant that after weeks of enjoying idyllic weather and warm seas, the world’s best surfers were thrown into 13oC Portuguese water, but the waves they were lucky enough to surf and we were lucky enough to witness throughout the course of the contest would have quickly dispelled any concerns about the chilly waters. This is how both the men’s and the women’s events went down.
That was some Hawaiian leg. After the excitement of Pipeline, which saw two incredible wins from surfers at the polar opposite stages of their careers in Kelly Slater and Moana Jones Wong, Sunset Beach didn’t disappoint, with enormous, unruly conditions and a couple more surprise winners.
